| Great Investments for the Next Downturn
The market's long-term trajectory is up, of course, but as recent history shows, there are plenty of fits and starts along the way. Slightly more distant history makes the point much more dramatically. Remember early 2000? During that year, the Nasdaq 100-tracking Cubes (QQQQ) -- an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that recently included Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX), eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) among its top holdings -- swooned to the tune of nearly 37%. Investors who plunked down their hard-earned moola on that passive pick in January 2000 are still sitting on a sizable loss -- even after factoring in the market's impressive rise since late 2002. Investors in more mild-mannered index trackers have fared better. Still, between January 2000 and the close of 2006, Vanguard 500 Index (FUND: VFINX) -- an S&P 500 tracker anchored by the likes of Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), and Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) -- only managed a gain of roughly 1%.

We are starting to hit the limits of the net's current capacity to ...
But now there are signs that we've used up our inheritance, pawned the last of the family silver and run down the estate by not looking to the future. More people are online than ever before, and many of us are as profligate in our use of bandwidth as a decadent aristocrat who can't believe that the peasants will ever revolt. We can see this most clearly in the growth of online video, where concerns about network congestion are already being expressed. Recently I've been playing with Joost, the recently-announced video-streaming service from the people behind Skype and, before that, Kazaa. It's still in beta, but already it's clear that it provides an easy-to-use front end and decent quality video, something that other streaming services are going to find hard to match.
Let’s take the high road
When caught for a traffic violation, the Delhiite's usual response varies from ‘Do you know who I am?' to slipping the traffic policeman a bribe. The more audacious might try to speed away. Starting this week, all this is going to become that much more difficult as the Delhi High Court has come down heavily on traffic offenders with dramatic increases in fines. So, if you try and hit the road after a drop too many, you may have to cough up Rs 2,500, dangerous driving will leave you poorer by Rs 1,500 as will using mobile phones while driving. Those who jump red lights, go helmetless, use pressure horns or smoke will have to pay Rs 600. Now Cassandras may say that this will only encourage bribery by the notoriously law-averse Delhiite. But, initial signs are encouraging. On day one, the police have notched up 4,500 prosecutions and even VIPs were not spared.
