E German towns 'left to poverty'

After two decades of promises to revitalise its former communist east, Germany has abandoned swathes of the ex-GDR to poverty and depopulation, a scathing new report has revealed.

The trend, which has seen hundreds of thousands flee westwards from the neglect, is so bad that the old communist east is now studded with "ghost towns", it says.

The report, released late last month and called the Future Atlas 2007, is the most detailed examination of 439 towns and regions in Germany, and shatters the pledges made almost 20 years ago.

Sector Snap: Mortgage Lenders

Shares of mortgage lenders sank Monday after the second mortgage bank in two weeks said investors have lost their appetite for "Alt-A" mortgage debt, a type of home loan representing the next-lowest credit tier after subprime.

A week after M&T Bank Corp. said it was having trouble selling its Alt-A loans, American Home Mortgage Investment Corp. said it faced far fewer buyers bidding materially lower prices in an auction of Alt-A mortgage debt last month.

The secondary market for subprime mortgage debt began unraveling this year as home prices cooled and lenders reported a spike in missed payments among borrowers with the worst credit. The statements from M&T Bank and American Home Mortgage suggest the deterioration in subprime is spreading to higher-quality credit tiers.

Additional tax on gasoline is unacceptable

Minnesota is one of the highest taxed states — presently the fourth highest taxed state. Only Connecticut, New York and New Jersey have higher total taxes.

Do we really want to add 10 cents to the present tax on gasoline? I wonder if our DFL friends will walk out again if they can't get their way. I hope Gov. Pawlenty has the good sense to give it the veto it deserves.

Over the last 20 years, I've spent time working with volunteers after disasters, including Mississippi. Mobile, Columbus and Hattiesburg are some of the places. I found a very different place than the one pictured in a recent letter to this paper.

I found a very church-oriented society of very giving people, both black and white. I always looked for damaged places in rural areas that may get overlooked.

Gruesome Taxpayer Slasher Plot Green-Lighted in Budapest

Ever since Hungarian real estate tycoon Sndor Demjn and Hungo-American producer Andy Vajna announced plans to build a giant film studio out in the Budapest 'burb of Etyek, we've been waiting for the announcement saying that the venture would get public money. Because just as sure as an oversexed teenager who ventures into the basement in some slasher flick will get decapitated or otherwise snuffed, this slightly dubious development was always going to get some free (or nicely discounted) cash from the Hungarian taxpayer.

Well, the big day has finally arrived, according to this dispatch in Tinseltown trade mag Variety filed by local movie news maven John Nadler.

The Hungarian State Development Bank is set to become an investor in Korda Studios, the $110 million, 429,000 sq.

Full text of the speech given by the education secretary, Alan ...

Too often, my visits as a national officer and general secretary in the 80s and early 90s were times of tragedy.

Postal workers were hijacked or their families taken hostage so that Royal Mail drivers and their vehicles could be used as proxy bombers. Our counter staff were declared a legitimate target by one paramilitary group for a thankfully brief period. And 17 of our members were assassinated in the course of their duties.
