Stuck Between Two Stools

Even with today's rapid application software development cycles, large projects are often barely complete before their tools and target platforms are supplanted by newer versions. It's almost as if the pace of tool and platform development is running ahead of the rate at which some application software developers can absorb and make use of them.

Competitive Advantage Many ASP.NET (1.0) projects rolled out well after ASP.NET 2.0 had shipped. More than a few new projects are still being developed, even today, with Visual Studio 2003 for .NET 1.1 rather than with VS2005 for .NET 2.0 (let alone 3.0). A few continue to use even earlier versions of Microsoft tools and platforms.

This may save a bit of money in the short term by avoiding the costs to upgrade tools and platforms.

Six Ways to Limit Uncle Sam's Take

Why are mutual funds such a potential tax headache? By law, mutual funds are required to pass all income and realized profits on investments along to shareholders through income and capital gains distributions. If you're investing through a taxable account, you'll have to pay taxes on those distributions. Short-term gains are taxed at the higher ordinary-income rate, as is income from taxable bonds, commodities, and real estate investment trusts. Meanwhile, long-term gains and stock dividends are generally taxed at the 15% rate. Thus, funds that trade a lot, and thus generate heavy short-term gains, generally aren't tax efficient. The same is true for income-heavy offerings, such as bond or REIT funds.

That's not to say you shouldn't have fast-trading funds in your portfolio or that you should avoid bonds and REITs.

Adolor Shares Drop After Bowel-Treatment Test Halted (Update4)

April 10 (Bloomberg) -- Adolor Corp.'s shares lost more than half their value after the company put development of a bowel- disorder drug on hold because of increased rates of heart attacks, benign and malignant tumors, and bone fractures.

The drug alvimopan, known as Entereg, was tested in patients whose bowels weren't properly functioning because they were taking painkillers, Adolor said. After a year, researchers found seven cases of heart attacks out of 538 patients on the drug, compared with zero out of 267 on a placebo, Adolor and its London-based partner, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, said yesterday.

The findings dashed hopes of approval this year for Entereg, Adolor's leading product in development. U.S. regulators asked for more data on the drug's risks last year, leading the Exton, Pennsylvania, company to disband a sales force that had little prospect of anything to sell.
