How to Spot Great Stocks

If you want to be a wildly successful investor, you'll need to invest in wildly successful companies. (Or mutual funds, or apartment buildings, etc.) But zeroing in on the most promising companies is easier said than done. Here's a favorite method of mine: Build a list of wonderful companies, and then watch for their stocks to fall to compelling prices.

To help you determine whether the company you're looking at is a first-class operation you'd be proud to have in your portfolio, here are five hallmarks of great companies:

1. Powerful brands Think of well-known brand names in the United States -- or better yet, around the world. General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) place among the top 10 brands in the world, as ranked by Interbrand. This kind of popular recognition can give these companies a leg up in their industries.

Langtons Property Plus - Our Privilege, Your Rewards: Investing in ...

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - April 3, 2007) - Residential investment property specialist, Langtons Property Plus (www.langtonspp.com) is launching its unique property rewards programme, The Privilege Club, at the Invest in Property exhibition in London's Earls Court.

Complementing Langtons Property Plus' (LPP) traditional estate agency, the Privilege Club recognises that many purchasers are looking for advice and assistance when buying in the UK and overseas - for instance how to find a reputable UK based solicitor, navigate local bureaucracy, savings on furnishing and insurance - when they are building and managing a property portfolio. It brings all this together in a comprehensive package designed to remove the hassle and complexity from property investment.

And with more than 70 new build developments and self-build plots in emerging UK and global hotspots including the 2012 London Olympic catchment area, Bulgaria, Turkey, Morocco, France and the Caribbean, potential property purchasers can view and purchase through LPP in exactly the same way that they could buy a property through a high street estate agency.

Master craftsperson Julie van der Putten's wonderful energetic style has won her a huge following for her quilting and craft seminars and workshops.

Nationally renowned by her pen name 'Puddle', Julie is sometimes referred to as the Martha Stewart of patchwork and quilting. Full of undiluted passion for her craft, she never holds back from an opportunity to enthuse over the skills and secrets of this ancient art.

"I have always been interested in craft and sewing and have made my own clothing and crafts since childhood," she said. "And it has given me many, many wonderful years of enjoyment!"

Julie's interest has become a successful business for her, retailing patchwork and quilting fabrics and teaching patchwork classes including Meshwork, Machine Appliqué by Hand, Stack 'n Whack and many other techniques.

MLB Betting: Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

The Royals continue to get disrespected by books even though they have showed they make for a tough team to beat at home. I said prior to his last start that Meche has the pitching arsenal to be a dominant pitcher, and he showed that on opening day by running through a Red Sox lineup. His problem has always been a mental deficiency and a lack of confidence that usually was displayed in his road starts when playing for the Mariners. When at home, he was a much more effective pitcher for Seattle, and if his first start was any indication, it appears that he is doing the same for the Royals.

Not only does Meche have one of the higher disparities of home vs. away numbers, but the same could be said for his day vs. night numbers, as it appears that his curveball is much harder to pick up during the day.

What a draw

Science geeks aren't the only ones who should celebrate the latest news that the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will be building the world's strongest neutron magnet.

It's also a positive development for the Big Bend region and the state of Florida - economic development, that is.

QUARTERLY INVESTMENT REVIEW

NEW YORK -- In February, Fortress Investment Group, a manager of hedge funds and private equity, enjoyed a successful initial public offering. Now, Blackstone Group, a premier private-equity shop, is preparing to go public as well. And Wall Street is abuzz with promise of more to come.

But are shares in these alternative investment firms a good deal for small investors?

Shake-up for ‘remittance’ tax system

The British tradition of worldwide taxation – a legacy of William Pitt – could be swept away in favour of a European-style system under proposed Treasury reforms of corporate tax expected in a consultation document to be published this spring.

Elsewhere in Europe, most dividends are tax-exempt. But the UK system only exempts dividends from British subsidiaries. A British parent company receiving a dividend from an overseas subsidiary will be taxed, though it will be given credit for taxes paid overseas.

Rex Stores: Electronics, Ethanol and Real Estate

Geoff Gannon submits: In my post on Posco, Berkshire, and Buffett, I mentioned that I had published a quarterly newsletter when I began this blog, but discontinued it during the second half of 2006, when I found bargains had become too scarce to reliably provide enough material to fill a newsletter each quarter.

In the first issue of the newsletter, back in April of 2006, I wrote about a company called Rex Stores (RSC). Theoretically, Rex Stores is a chain of electronics retail stores. In reality, a considerable amount of the corporate assets an investor acquires an interest in when he buys the company's common stock has little or nothing to do with selling electronics.

Some of you may remember how Bill Rempel answered the last of his twenty questions on January 24th, 2006:

20.
